In comparison to masonry walls or insulation added in boards, mineral wool is available in rolls or slabs, is easy to attach to the studs, and can be covered by adding plywood to attach plasterboard. Mineral wool in either slabs or rolls will provide thermal comfort and fire protection to your home.
The best way to keep a timber frame house warm is to ensure that you have insulation installed. Insulating the cavity between the frame will improve the U value of your home. Suitable insulation, such as mineral wool, can be added to the studs during the timber frame construction.
Cavity wall insulation is not suitable for a timber frame house, as the cavity is needed to ensure that moisture has a way to be removed from the house. There are many other types of insulation that can be added instead of cavity wall insulation.
It is recommended that a vapour barrier, vapour control layer, is added to a timber frame wall. A vapour barrier is used to protect the insulation from rainwater being able to penetrate through to the insulation and damage it.
Damp insulation can also cause issues with the internal walls and plasterboard, reducing the thermal and acoustic performance of the insulation and causing damp to the studs, walls, and possibly floors.
To achieve the best results from your vapour barrier, it should be fixed to the top and bottom of the timber frame at 250mm centres. The installation of vapour barriers should also be included around openings and at laps.
